The Monday memo is food for thought to fuel your week.
Hi everyone,
Asking for feedback.
When you ask for feedback on a creative project, it helps to let the other person know what you are looking for. What kind of feedback do you want? Sometimes you just want encouragement. Sometimes you want to talk something through. Sometimes you want critical feedback. At various stages in a project, you might want different things.
Here are a few ways you can ask for feedback:
Give me your gut check/gut reaction.
Talk it through with me.
Help me compare the current state with my goal.
Help me identify constraints.
Help me with my work process.
Help me explore more options.
Help me make a choice.
Help me with the ideas.
Help me with the form.
Am I being true to myself?
Break it/shred it.
Cheer me on. Help me stay motivated to keep going.
Help me build on it, add to it, expand it
What can I take out/eliminate?
What should I keep? What is core?
What would need to be true for you to buy this?
What do you like about it? What do you wish was here? What do you wonder about it?
What else is out there that I should be looking at?
Who out there can help me with this?
Who else should I talk to?
What else should I be asking?
Exercise.
Here’s your exercise for the week: Think about where you are in your creative process and what kind of feedback you need. Then ask for it specifically.
Our next Collaboratory.
In our next Collaboratory, Donna Lichaw (pronounced LEE-schow) will share a mental model she uses in her leadership coaching that is truly transformational. It’s all about stories and beliefs. I’ve been using it in my personal life and it has resulted in some profound positive change. If you liked Liminal Thinking, you’ll love what Donna will be sharing in her Collaboratory on August 7th. Mark you calendar!
Become a member today to access this live, interactive session, on Wednesday, August 7, from 9 to 10:30 am Pacific time.
Project studio.
I’m also planning a change-up from our Collaboratory format in October. Starting October 16, I will run a six-week intensive I’m calling project studio. I will provide a lightweight structure within which we will work together to complete our personal creative projects, encourage and support each other, and hold each other accountable to being true to our creative selves. Project studio will meet weekly, every Wednesday, from 9 to 10:30 am, starting October 16 and wrapping up on November 20, just before Thanksgiving in the US. So mark those dates on your calendar and stay tuned for more details. Project studio will be free for members.
Members get access to all events, event recordings, and our archive.
As of this week we have 80 members. In 2025, membership dues will increase to $30/month, $300/year. If you join now, you will lock in the $20/month, $200/year rate for as long as your subscription remains active.
If you’re already a member, thank you. You’re making this possible.
More information for members is below the fold.
