The Monday memo is food for thought to fuel your week.
Hi everyone,
A reflection is an image seen in a mirror, light waves bouncing back, not the thing but a representation, an inversion, a mirror image. You can never really see yourself as others see you. All we can ever see are reflections.
Another way you are reflected is in your thoughts and memories. Reflections of the you that came before, reverberations of the you that you were, and the you that you have become and are becoming.
Socrates said that the unexamined life is not worth living. The end of the year is a good time to reflect on your life, your motivations, your values, your beliefs, your choices, and your actions.
Do you know what you want? This is one of the hardest questions to answer. Are you the kind of person that you want to be? Are you on a path to becoming that person?
As we close one year and open the next, we are crossing a threshold. We don’t cross this threshold many times in life. So it’s a good time for a personal accounting. My friend Mathias Jakobsen writes an annual report every year that he shares with friends and followers. Writer Kelly McMasters writes her own obituary every year.
Exercise.
Here’s your exercise for the week. Reflect on your year, or even your entire life so far. Write down your reflections. What were the moments that stand out for you? What has changed? Who are you, where do you come from, what are you becoming?
I also encourage you to consider publishing your reflections (or at least some of them). Sometimes sharing these kinds of things creates reverberations in others and those things can sometimes reflect back to you in surprising and interesting ways. See what happens.
