Make time.
The Monday memo is food for thought to fuel your week.
Hi everyone,
Where do you find the time for your creative work?
When something is a priority in your life, you don’t find time for it, you make time for it. And in the creative life, time is the most precious resource.
How do you make time?
You go to bed later, or wake up earlier. You make 30 minutes to journal when you first get up, or right before bed, or both.
You block out time on your calendar for creative work, and then you protect it from invitations. For creative work, invitations are threats. Become a miser with your time. Say no to things that might be fun. You will miss out on things. Deal with it. Because the time you make for creative work is quality time with yourself.
Commitments to others can be a powerful motivator to create more time for creative work. Promise to give a talk, or have a show, or finish a book chapter. Make public promises to get things done by a certain deadline. And take those promises seriously.
If you have to show up on Monday and give a 20-minute talk about your work, I am certain you will be making time over the weekend to get it done.
Exercise.
Here’s your exercise for the week. Review your daily and weekly routines, and make time for your creative work. Beg, borrow, and steal time from other activities. Block out time and fiercely protect it.
