The Monday memo is food for thought to fuel your week.

Hi everyone,

A landing page is a standalone web page designed to achieve a specific goal. That goal could be any number of things you want people to do online: buy a product, sign up for an email list, sign a petition, apply for a job, join a club, and so on.

A landing page is a great exercise if you have goals that you want to achieve, because it’s so specifically goal-oriented. Everything on a landing page is designed to support and encourage the action you want people to take. There are no distractions on a landing page — no links to any other place on the web — just the thing you want them to do.

It’s easy to get distracted when you design things, especially web pages. You want to say everything and link everywhere, and that’s the beauty of the web. The beauty of landing pages are their clarity and simplicity. They are like sharks with frickin’ laser beams attached to their heads, one clear goal that everything else needs to support.

Like anything so sharp, clear and pointed, it’s good for one thing because it’s designed for one thing. It’s a useful element in your toolkit if you want to learn how to create customers. If you’re in the early stages of an entrepreneurial journey, you might want to start with a landing page designed to encourage people to sign up for your email list.

You did that last September, about 30 weeks ago, right? How’s that going?

Exercise.

Here’s your exercise for the week: make a landing page. It doesn’t have to be fancy. It can be super simple. And you don’t have to be a web designer. You can start with a piece of paper or a Google doc. In fact your landing page can BE a Google doc for that matter. Create a clear, compelling offer and end with a clear action at the end of it, like a button or link.

Then share it online and see what happens.

Back to school this week!

We resume our project studio sessions this Wednesday, April 16th, at 9am Pacific time. More information for members is below the fold.👇
