Give your unconscious a job to do.

The Monday memo is food for thought to fuel your week.

Hi everyone,

Your unconscious mind never sleeps.

While you dream, it wanders through the archives of your experience — memories, fragments, puzzles — stitching things together in the dark. It’s the quiet partner that keeps working long after your conscious mind clocks out. Your conscious mind is like the surface of the ocean, constantly in motion. Your unconscious is the quiet depths.

Exercise.

Give your unconscious a job to do while you are asleep. At night, before you go to bed, write down a question or point toward a problem. For example: What am I missing here? or How could this connect? Then let it go, like dropping a stone into the water.

In the morning, write. Sometimes your unconscious will give you nothing. Sometimes it will surprise you with an idea, a dream, a clue. Don’t judge or analyze right away. Just collect what it offers.

Your unconscious won’t always listen. It has its own priorities. But if you give it regular work, it starts showing up more often. Like a quiet, idiosyncratic, brilliant collaborator.

So this week, before you sleep, give your unconscious a job. Ask a question. Plant a seed. Then trust your unconscious to work the night shift.

See what happens.
