The School of the Possible theme for 2024
The most powerful possibility-creating skill that I know
Hi all,
As the clock counts down to the end of the year, I’ve been thinking a lot about my goals for the School of the Possible in 2024. What mountain do I want to climb? One way to think about this is to think about what I want for the community. Since you ARE the community, that means, what are my hopes and dreams for you? What mountain will we climb together?
The more I think this, the more I believe that the truest, best, most valuable possibilitarian skill I can teach is the art of creating a customer. Because over the past 30 years, I have come to believe that the most powerful portal to possibility I have ever come across is easy to understand but hard to do:
Create a customer.
Create a customer. It sounds simple. Crossing that threshold was not easy for a creative person like myself, because it meant becoming a salesperson. And sales is, well, icky. At least, that’s how I used to feel about it. But then a mentor of mine shared this thought with me:
“Nothing happens until somebody sells something.”
And the more I thought about it, the more it revealed. I mean, we buy things all the time, right? You go to the grocery store, the mall, Amazon, the App Store, whatever. In order to survive in the modern world you have to buy things. And every time you buy something, there’s someone on the other side, selling it.
It’s the sellers who create choices in the world, and the buyers who decide which sellers survive and which ones go bankrupt.
And the corollary to this, the very important corollary, is that the sellers are also creating the most freedom, autonomy, and choice for themselves, as well.
I’ll have more to say about this between now and January 1, but for now, I want you to know that our learning theme and focus for 2024 is going to be this:
Create a customer.
That’s my hope and dream for you, my possibilitarian friend: That you will create a customer in the coming year.
That’s not a simple or easy task. In order to get there you will have to produce something. It could be that you will publish a book. Or maybe you will create a workshop or course. Maybe you design a tool or a toolkit, launch a product, or even launch a service business. I don’t know what it will be. And you will have to put a price on it. Also not easy, putting a financial value on yourself and your work. But if you have a jobby-job, make no mistake, you’re doing it every day of the week!
But my dream, and goal, is that a year from now, I will be proudly watching 100+ possibilitarians launch beautiful new things into the world, creating wonderful new choices for customers, and more freedom and choice for themselves as well.
